What do Legal Document Assistants (LDAs) do?
LDAs may:
- Disseminate written or approved by a lawyer.
- Prepare legal documents under the clients’ directions (i.e., self-represented litigants). The legal documents must be chosen by the clients based on the attorneys’ written guidance for a specific situation, such as divorce with children.
- For instance, the LDA can just simply say, “Here is what a lawyer says you need for a divorce with children. Would you like me to fill out these forms listed here for you?”
- Help the clients fill out legal forms correctly and accurately by making sure that every bit of detail is included on the forms.
- File the filled-out legal documents for the clients in the residing courts.
LDA Professional Regulation:
Section 6408 of the Business and Professional Code stipulates that all LDAs need to have registrant’s name, business address, telephone numbers, registration number, expiration date, and county of registration on all solicitation and advertisement materials.
